JT Scott | 12/01/2013 | 1

Hey folks! I’m going to be posting a few more regular updates as we get more and more involved with hosting seminars and creating community working groups – because there’s more stuff than ever planned for the winter and spring at CFSV! Here’s two cool events happening this week that you might be interested in.

Any questions? Ideas for a project you’d like to see us get involved in? Email me! I’m always interested to hear what flicks your switch!

This Thursday, December 5 at 12:30pm:
Live Chat with Mayor Joe
Regarding Union Square
and the future of CFSV

Mayor Joe Curtatone knows what he wants in Union Square… and he thinks he knows what you want, too… unless you tell him otherwise.

Do you have thoughts or feelings regarding the City of Somerville’s plan to seize 662,400+ SqFt of property in Union Square and hand it to a single “master developer”?

Do you in particular think that using sweeping political authority to seize a small piece of land unconnected to any other is wrong?

Do you support our small, community-oriented, locally-owned business with dreams for redevelopment of our own property? Would you rather see us build a community center with roots in our neighborhood rather than be part of a monolithic “instant burb” project like Station Landing?

CrossFit Somerville sits on about 8000 square feet of Union Square – less than 1.5% of the area Mayor Joe Curtatone has targeted to be carved off and handed to his “preferred development partner”. Surely allowing us to remain as property owners, partners, and developers in this neighborhood would not significantly decrease the value the Mayor and his “development partner” would be reaping in this project.

The Mayor stated in a letter to the Boston Globe on November 25 that he would be hosting an online town meeting to get your feedback. There’s no link online for that yet, but I believe he does need to hear what you have to say on this topic.

Said the Mayor: “We want to expand the conversation that began with SomerVision and continues at community meetings. On Thursday, Dec. 5 at 12:30 p.m., we will hold an online chat where you can ask me and our planning staff questions directly about redevelopment of Union Square. Questions can be asked in real-time on the chat, emailed in advance to my office at Mayor@somervillema.gov.”

So please send an email to mayor@somervillema.gov before Thursday Noon if you have something to say on this topic!

(This event will be updated with a link to the Live Chat if/when it is published.)
