Form matters
Which of the above athletes would you rather be? From my point of view, I see one athlete who is very strong and has a high capacity in a low skill movement but that will struggle with more complex athletic feats, another that is very balanced but not engaged who looks like they would struggle in a less controlled or dynamic environment, and one that looks in control and engaged, who could use the position they are training to maintain as a jumping off point to develop fun new and more complex skills. From that viewpoint, it should be obvious which I’d choose.
Take this idea to heart as you approach today’s workout. All of our movements today are fairly simple, but the magic comes in performing them exceptionally well. If we put the same effort into each air squat we to today as we would a PR clean attempt, imagine the changes we could make to ourselves. I will be eyeing our lockouts on the overhead walking lunges. If those elbows aren’t straight and those shoulders aren’t driving up into our kettlebells, we’re not training a useful habit. I promise, those lunges will be plenty of fun at a weight that we can maintain a stable overhead position.

Have an awesome New Years, everyone! See you all in 2014!
Back Squat 5×5 (since I just deadlifted heavy on Thursday): 175#pr
WOD: 11:01 with 3/4 pood. I hate finishing wods in :00 and :01 and etc. Sooo much better to finish at :59! But it might just be because I’m a little bit neurotic…
Deadlift: 135# PR!
WOD: 15:20 with the smallest kettlebell. My legs are all wobbly now.
In more exciting news, I managed to to do my first Toes to Bar tonight. I was so surprised I let go of the bar almost immediately, and then just had to do another after a few seconds later to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating. I wasn’t! I managed to achieve both of my 2013 goals, so Happy New Years to me! Bring it on, 2014!
Congrats on the year end goals, Katie! That’s awesome, TTB win!
Thanks Lydia! Looks like you rocked it out last night yourself ;). Happy new year!!
DL: 265# Working up on my strength. Felt great to lift heavy and not have lower back issues. Baby Steps.
WOD: 14:04 32 lb KB.
Glad to see lots of goals being crossed off, did my 1/2 Marathon Row couple weeks ago with couple of cool kids! 😉
Happy New Year Everyone!!!
DL: 165# PR (thanks for letting me squeeze that last set in, coach!)
WOD: 17:30? Maybe? I got confused on my rounds.
Great to see a big rowdy Monday night class! Happy New Year, all!
Upon further inspection the lululemon bra lady seems to be using the bookshelf for support on the tip of the heel of her foot. Still looks the best though. I certainly can’t do a handstand yet so I am not judging.
