Summer is here! Time for water and a 5k!

The Solstice might technically be this weekend, but summer has definitely arrived in Somerville.  With the increased heat, hydration becomes incredibly important.  It’s easy to forget about until you get here some days, but hydrating properly for intense physical activity happens hours before the activity itself.  So while you’ll probably find yourself taking more trips to the drinking fountain during class (but not during WODs, right?), try to be conscious of your water consumption throughout the day, especially on workout days.  And notice I’m specifically referring to water.  There is no replacement for it – juice, soda, sports drinks, even alcohol 😉 won’t replace your body’s need for water.  So drink up to keep yourself healthy and ready to work hard.

STR:

AMRAP 12
Rope climbs (compare to 4/9/14)

WOD:

6 rounds
10 deadlifts (135/95)
200m run
2 wall climbs

Also: On SATURDAY, JUNE 28TH we are very excited to announce our first annual 5k from CrossFit Fenway to  CrossFit Somerville. CFSV is almost exactly 3.14 miles away from CFF so we thought we would kick off the summer with an in-house 5k capped off with a BBQ with both communities. Anyone is welcome to feel free to bring friends. We will head out from CrossFit Fenway at 11:30am. See you all there!

Reminder:

This Saturday, June 21, CrossFit Somerville will be running a charity WOD at the normal class time. The Squats for a School WOD will benefit Empower Charter School, the first charter school with CrossFit Kids written into the charter petition. “Empower will also integrate health/wellness into the regular school curriculum, and educate parents and the community about how to promote wellness at home.”

With obesity on the rise among children and many public education systems getting rid of physical education programs due to lack of funding, Empower Charter School is hoping to make youth physical fitness a priority. As a CrossFit Athlete, you understand the importance of physical fitness, and ingraining a mentality towards health and wellness from a young age.

The WOD will be run during our regular 10am Saturday class time, and is easily accessible for all ability levels. The requested donation for this WOD is $15, and will be in place of the standard Saturday drop-in fee. If you are planning on using one of your regular weekly classes for Saturday, a donation is not required but would be appreciated.

Rope climbs- didn’t count, but worked on J-hook and legless

Wod- 9:18 @ rx weight and 1 3/4 wall climbs per round. Tended to get excited about deadlifts and spring straight from a handstand into a jog to the bar without hitting my chest to the ground to end the rep. Tough mental hurdle in today’s wod. Kept getting ahead of myself. Need to go one movement at a time on these sprint wods.

Rope climbs – Last time I was able to set up with the S hook. This time I got in several little climbs for the first time(s) in my life. \o/. And here I always thought those kids in gym class that could climb the ropes were mutants (although Chris’ super-impressive L-sit rope climb might still qualify as mutant-level hardcore!).

WOD: 14:51 with 95# DL, 200m hobbles, and backward bear crawls. Time for a rest day!
