Getting heavy off the ground
We pick things up all the time. It’s a basic function and necessary part of being human. In CrossFit, we often default to the “conventional” deadlift with our feet under our hips and grip outside the legs. We choose this often because of how well it translates to other lifts we do (like the clean and the snatch). In life, however, we rarely find ourselves picking things up in this fashion. For instance, if you were to try and pick up a (fill in the blank – couch, rock, refrigerator, safe, or anything heavy that you can think of) chances are the most convenient and efficient way will involve a wider stance and setting your grip inside your legs. Enter the sumo deadlift. Today we’re going to take some time to get comfortable with this movement, getting as wide of a stance as we have the hip mobility for while still keeping the knees tracking the toes. So get tight, load that posterior chain and let’s pick up some heavy stuff.

SCHEDULE REMINDER: We are trying a slight adjustment in the evening classes next week. They will take place at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30pm instead of the normal 5, 6, and 7pm time slots. There will also be no class on Friday, July 4th.
This SATURDAY, JUNE 28TH we are very excited to announce our first annual 5k from CrossFit Fenway to CrossFit Somerville. CFSV is almost exactly 3.14 miles away from CFF so we thought we would kick off the summer with an in-house 5k capped off with a BBQ with both communities. Anyone is welcome to feel free to bring friends. We will head out from CrossFit Fenway at 11:30am.
Some additional details:
You are welcome to meet at CrossFit Fenway, but if you would like to carpool over, meet at CFSV at 11am.
You don’t need to do the run, we also encourage you to just come hang out at CFSV, eat, drink and be merry with both CrossFit communities.
There will be meet and vegetables on the grill and some beer/cider provided but feel free to bring a side dish or extra beverages if you’d like.
There will be no Saturday morning class at 10am.
We will work out a “bag shuttle” for those of you going directly to CFF to get anything you bring there back to CFSV.
If you are interested in participating, let us know here on the blog or send an email to projects@crossfitsomerville.com. If you forget, it’s no big deal but it will help us to have a general headcount.
See you all there!
