5 Reasons to Join the CrossFit Open: Parts 1 and 2 – Focus and Challenge
Hey Friends! We’re planning on being open for Tuesday (but certainly stay tuned if things are looking greasy…)
The CrossFit Open is upon us, and Brian has put together set of blogs talking about what it is and why to do it (i.e. what you can get out of participating). Take a look, and give it some thought.
The CrossFit Open starts in less than 3 weeks, so we are writing a series this week of reasons that we think you (yes, all of you) should be participating in the Open. With the snow day yesterday we weren’t able to get the first part out, so here are parts 1 and 2 for you, in which we talk about Focus and Challenge.
Focus: In our recent programming cycle, we’ve spent the last 5 weeks putting additional focus on each movement and workout that we do. Some days we’ve been talking about what we should be doing with our feet, midline or shoulders in relation to a specific lift, and we’ve brought you workouts with intention on breathing, sprinting, pacing, and cycling movements with and without the barbell. Hopefully many of you have found that bringing a focus to our daily training sessions allows us to gain even more from the hour spent in the gym.
Participating in the CrossFit Open can have a similar effect of focusing our training. There are many movements and skills within the domain of CrossFit, which can be overwhelming, so an outside force like the Open can help us to focus our training on a specific set of tasks.
Challenge: The Open workouts will also challenge us in many ways. There may be movements that you are unable to do unassisted, or weights that you haven’t yet been able to move. As long as we approach the Open workouts safely and mindfully, the added challenge of the Open competition can help us to break through a plateau and do things that we might not have thought were possible.
The CrossFit Open starts on February 26th, with five workouts over the course of five weekends. If you are interested in participating in the CrossFit Open, you can sign up on The CrossFit Games Website. Create an account, register, and join the CrossFit Somerville Affiliate and Team. You can also check out the CrossFit Open Page or the recent CFSV Newsletter for more details on this years’ Open.
If you are unsure if the CrossFit Open is for you, talk to your coaches and fellow athletes who have participated before; I’m certain you will hear about many positive experiences. This year, there is even a scaled division, if you are worried that the Rx movements or weights might not be appropriate for you.
Strength:
Gymnastics AMRAP:
Handstand
Single Leg Squats
WOD:
Open 13.2:
AMRAP 10:
5 Should to Overhead (115#/75#)
10 Deadlift (115#/75#)
15 Box Jump (24″/20″)
Focus: Find a pace that you can hold for 10 minutes, and build intensity over that time. Find which movement is easiest for you and use that time to breathe and recover.

Gymnasty: strung together 2 Rx Handstand Push-ups, Pistols – added weight with a smaller step
WOD: 7 rounds +6 = 216 Rx
WOD: 5 + 8, Rx
And I don’t have much to say about the gymnastic portion.
