The final installment of our series on reasons that you should participate in the CrossFit Open, and arguably the most important one of all: Community
For all of the reasons we’ve written about in the past week to do the CrossFit Open (Focus, Challenge, Intensity, Competition), none of them really matters without the larger context of Community and Fun.
Most of you are at CrossFit Somerville not just because you like the workouts, but because you also like the people that you get to spend an hour with each day.  CrossFit was built around the community that it inspired, and the CrossFit Open is really just a gigantic world-wide celebration of that community through a friendly fitness competition.
On a more micro-scale, the CrossFit Open serves to reinforce and strength the CrossFit Somerville community.  We will host the workouts on Saturday mornings for all of the athletes participating, and friends and family are invited to cheer as well.  Will all of your fellow athletes supporting you, there is no better expression of a celebration of fitness.  Despite goals and weight loss and PRs, the real reason that we get out of bed every morning to come to the gym, or on our way home after a long day of work, is for the community and people that make CrossFit Somerville special.
The CrossFit Open starts on February 26th, with five workouts over the course of five weekends.  If you are interested in participating in the CrossFit Open, you can sign up on The CrossFit Games Website.  Create an account, register, and join the CrossFit Somerville Affiliate and Team.  You can also check out the CrossFit Open Page or the recent CFSV Newsletter for more details on this years’ Open.
If you are unsure if the CrossFit Open is for you, talk to your coaches and fellow athletes who have participated before; I’m certain you will hear about many positive experiences.  This year, there is even a scaled division, if you are worried that the Rx movements or weights might not be appropriate for you.
Strength:
1 RM Clean and Jerk
Focus: These are two separate movements, although you remain under load between them.  Finish the Clean to be in a good position for the Jerk.  Make sure you are in a solid position before sending the bar overhead.
WOD:
“Interval Annie”
AMRAP 10:
:90 Double Unders
:90 Sit-Ups
:75 Double Unders
:75 Sit-Ups
:60 Double Unders
:60 Sit-Ups
:45 Double Unders
:45 Sit-Ups
:30 Double Unders
:30 Sit-Ups
HOLIDAY UPDATE: We are normally closed on President’s Day (this coming Monday), but we’re planning to stay open this year because of all the Monday’s we missed due to snow (weather permitting, of course).

    C&J – 105
    WOD: 300 reps

  2. ben s says:

215#, which felt great. 225#, for some reason, felt about 100# heavier….no prs today…
WOD: lost count by the end of the first round of double-unders, maybe somewhere in the 240-50 range, +/- 100 or so….

  3. Roger says:

    STR
Clean and Jerk @ 85#. Worked on not getting too wide with the feet at the bottom of the squat.

    WOD
    109. Mostly situps, I got about 6 double unders.

I am making it a goal to improve overhead squats and double unders this year. I’ll start the goal simple and stretch it when I hit the initial milestone.

For overhead squats I’ll start the goal at being able to do more than just the bar.
For double unders I’ll start the goal at stringing 2-5 together.
