The primal and the refined
On the surface, today’s WOD might look to be combining movements on opposite ends of a spectrum. One, a highly technical Olympic lift and the other, something we all probably did as infants. While on some level this might be true, they are also similar in many ways.
Both are most effective when starting the power from the hips and transfer it it through a rigid core, into an object via the shoulders and arms. Moving mindlessly with either early will make them both much more difficult later on. And it’s worth noting that the technique of the snatch is completely contrived through years of trial and error – what has worked best for the best of the best when faced with the task of getting a barbell from the ground to overhead in one movement. In the grand scheme of things, we haven’t (as a species) been working on this very long. I would contend that by now, out crawling and dragging is much more refined as a movement.
