Build The Wall

As you’ve all noticed, our bathrooms and showers are back to normal! That’s the good news. The bad news is that the excavation destroyed our retaining wall. Fortunately, some all-stars helped me out during Open Gym time today – Michael Augustine, Nelly Oliver, Drew Shaver, Leo Schmitz, and Felipe Souza all pitched in for a bit. Together we moved a few thousand pounds of gravel (one shovel at a time) and something like 1200 pounds of concrete retaining wall blocks. We did get a bit of mud on the floor, so please excuse our mess for one more day – the cleaning crew is coming in tomorrow night to get the box back to shiny clean condition.

I’ve got a bit of a ways to go, and to finish it I’ll need to be using a concrete saw. I plan to do that work on Wednesday after coaching the morning classes, so if you’ve got free time between 10am and 2pm on Wednesday, please feel free to join me at the box for some concrete-cutting, block-stacking, and gravel-shoveling fun! Unlike that guy in Washington DC, I’m a politician who actually knows how to build a wall.

For the WOD today, we’re also going to be throwing rocks around – 45 pound dumbbells, actually. This is a grip-builder, so if you’re hoping to get better pullups or toes-to-bar this work can really pay off for you. We start with loads of power cleans, and then take a walk down to the stop sign carrying them. Set them down and sprint your way around our 200m loop, then pick the DBs back up and head inside for another big set of power cleans! In no time flat you’ll be heaving and feeling like you’ve got Popeye’s forearms.

One more note: congratulations to our resident photographer and local celebrity Ben Pender-Cudlip! His documentary “Dawnland” had its East Coast Premiere at Independent Film Festival Boston this weekend at our very own Somerville Theater! We’re all super proud of Ben and excited for this giant premiere event!

WOD:

AMRAP 20
25 DB Power Cleans (45/35)
50m Farmer Carry
200m Run

This one was really interesting. I had plenty of gas left in the tank, but just physically couldn’t continue to hold on to the DBs after the second set no matter how much I wanted to. Very different challenge than usual!
