Handstand theory

Today we will be working on building our handstands.  Some of you might be wondering why we do this.  I mean, they are fun and all, but how is this applicable to functional fitness?  Well I’m glad you asked.

I came across a blog recently that addressed this quite well.  They compared working on handstands to learning calculus.  Plenty of us had to learn calculus in school but few of us use it on a day to day basis.  What it did for most of us was to teach us how to think abstractly. The body awareness and control it takes to perform a proper handstand will transfer to any movement based activity.  So while you might not have plans to walk around on your hands anytime soon, come in today knowing that we’ll be building a foundation that can carry over to almost anything.

While we’re talking functional, the WOD will have us throwing an odd object over and obstacle and then getting ourselves over the same obstacle.  Zombie apocalypse prep anyone?

Reminders:

This Monday, the gym will be closed for regular classes in observance of Memorial Day.  We will however be running the hero WOD Murph at 11am.  This will be open to anyone at all who would like to participate.  This does not count as a class and there is no fee for drop-ins.  Email me if you or anyone you know are planning on attending at nick@crossfitsomerville.com so I have an idea ahead of time of how many to expect.  Hope to see you all there!

Also, This week will be Lara’s last at the box before moving to Pittsburgh.  To celebrate, her last WOD is the 6pm Thursday (today!), at which point she will be adjourning to The Independent for drinks etc. She invites all of us to come join her and socialize when the WODs are done!

    Worked on hollow body position.

Wow those are killer and good for you, will incorporate these in weekly routine.

WOD: 7:09 with box over jumps not vaulting and box push ups. Hand felt good and relieved. Saw the WOD earlier and was stressed how my hand would take it, scaled perfectly.

I wish I’d read the zombie apocalypse comment before this WOD. Would’ve grabbed a heavier sandbag!
