Lasting change
When most of us decided to take that step and walk through the door to CrossFit that first time, we learned a lot about ourselves we probably didn’t expect to. We might have felt fit and strong, but invariably we find (or are shown) things we aren’t great at (or maybe even suck at). And for many of us, we started to realize how our mobility (or lack there of) was holding us back.
So we learned some rolling and stretching techniques, maybe even started following mobility WOD, and we saw improvements. But there were still some things (maybe chronically tight hips, maybe shoulders that need 30 minutes of warm up before we can even think of putting weight overhead) that just don’t seem to go away. Why is that?
Because it’s all in your head. No, I’m not saying you’re making it up, what I’m saying is that despite the fact that you’ve been getting your tissues moving better, your brain still uses the movement patterns and habits that it built (for years) before you had started this work. This is why we focus so much on rebuilding the brain-body connection, relearning how to control our body (and another big reason why I love crawling). Here is a great article to read if it sounds like I’m describing you at all. Rolling and stretching is great and it can feel amazing, but if we want to make lasting change, we need to reprogram our brains.

Our friends at CrossFit Fenway are hosting a very special Last Mile WOD to fight Ebola in Liberia on November 22. Last Mile Health is a local non-profit in Boston that operates on the ground in Liberia fighting the Ebola epidemic. (We’re using Crowdrise to help raise funds for them.) How can you participate? Start a fundraising page (just takes a FB login) and ask your friends and families for donations… invite friends to do the same or even to come work out with us on November 22… and then come on down and have a good time with the team from CFF and CFSV! Or, just go to JT’s fundraising page and make a donation to the cause.
