September Traditions

Ah, September in Somerville. We don’t have many trees, so the leaf-peeping isn’t exactly stellar, but we do have our own traditions. The Fluff Festival happened last weekend. The Patriots open the NFL season. Apple picking begins. But more impactful than any of those is Moving Day.

The entire Boston area revolves around the September 1 lease cycle, and most of you have felt the pain of trying to rent a UHaul (or even find street parking) from Aug 30-Sept 2. Union Square in particular is hard hit, in part because the rental rate is so high here. The housing units in our neighborhood are only 20% owner-occupied, according to the City of Somerville.

For 6,000 units in the Union Square area, only 1,200 are owned by the people living there. That means 4,800 apartments being moved into and out on the regular. And since rental units in this city turn over on average every 2 years, that means over 2,000 moves happen within a mile of CFSV every Sept 1. Crazy to think about it, but it explains why the streets are such a mess and why everyone gets so stressed out.

It also means that September is a busy month for us administratively. With so many people moving out, we lose old friends as they move away from the box – and we also field an enormous number of new member and free trial requests! The flood is starting to slow down and things will (as always) find their new equilibrium. But with all these new people on board now (20 new members since Sept 1) you’re going to see some new faces in the box.

Get friendly! Welcome these people, introduce yourself, and help them get to know how we do things here. After all, many of these people are your new neighbors… and we’re not just building stronger people here at CrossFit Somerville. We’re working to build a stronger community.

And while you’re at it, tell them to read the blog and post their scores/times/weights to the comments! 🙂
